Malla Reddy Dental College for Women and Malla Reddy Institute of Dental Sciences are dental colleges that were recently converted into deemed universities. These colleges were previously affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal, Telangana.
The fee structure given above is taken from the KNRUHS notification for MDS admissions for the academic year 2025–26. This fee structure reflects the old fees under university affiliation. The current MDS fees for these colleges, after their conversion to deemed university status, are not yet available.
KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences, Sharad Pawar Dental College and Hospital, and K.M. Shah Dental College and Hospital are the MDS deemed dental colleges that offer the lowest fees for non-clinical branches, which are ₹1,47,000 to ₹2,97,000, ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,50,000, and ₹3,00,000 respectively.

This hike applies to tuition fees across each of the three years, meaning students completing a full MDS course may experience two to three fee increment cycles. Prospective students should factor this escalation into their total cost planning before selecting a college.

MDS Fees in Deemed Universities NON-Clinical Branches
Non-clinical branches focus on theoretical knowledge, diagnosis, research, and public health aspects of dentistry. These branches develop expertise in disease identification, academic research, and community-based dental care rather than intensive clinical procedures.
According to the Dental Council of India (DCI), 2 main non-clinical branches are recognized under MDS, which are:
- Oral Pathology and Microbiology
- Public Health Dentistry
Oral Medicine and Radiology is often considered a semi-clinical branch. This branch includes both clinical and non-clinical elements. Therefore, some sources classify it under clinical branches, while others classify it under non-clinical branches.
Technically, the total number of non-clinical branches becomes 3 when Oral Medicine and Radiology is included.
MDS fees in deemed universities for non-clinical branches generally range from ₹2,00,000 to ₹8,00,000 per year, although in rare cases they can be as low as ₹49,000 or go up to ₹14,33,250 depending on the institution.
Total MDS course fees in deemed universities for non-clinical branches typically range from ₹6,00,000 to ₹24,00,000 for the full 3-year program, although rare cases may fall outside this range.

Costs Beyond Tuition in Deemed MDS Programs
Most students research MDS fees in deemed universities and stop at the tuition figure. The tuition is only one part of what you actually pay. Deemed dental colleges charge several additional mandatory fees on top of tuition, and clinical MDS students carry a second layer of costs that comes from the nature of the work itself — treating patients daily using materials, laboratory services, and consumables.
This section breaks down every cost layer a deemed MDS student should account for before admission.
- Mandatory Fees Charged by the College
These are institutional charges that appear in fee structures alongside tuition. The PDF data for 34 deemed colleges reveals the following categories:
- University and Examination Fees
Every deemed university charges annual university affiliation or eligibility fees separately from tuition. Sri Siddhartha Dental College charges a university fee of ₹40,000 per year on top of tuition. JSS Dental College bundles university and other charges into ₹96,850 per year. Sharad Pawar Dental College charges ₹50,000 per year as university fees and another ₹50,000 per year as co-curricular fees. Dr. D.Y. Patil Pune charges university eligibility fees equivalent to 15% of annual tuition in the first year only, plus exam fees of ₹25,000 per subject per attempt.
- Development and Resource Fees
Manav Rachna Dental College charges ₹2,25,000 per year as development charges and ₹14,500 per year as student resource fees — both mandatory and separate from tuition. These two heads alone add ₹7,18,500 to the 3-year total before any clinical costs are counted.
- Security Deposits
Most deemed colleges collect a refundable security deposit at admission. K.M. Shah Dental College charges ₹25,000. Manipal colleges (both Manipal and Mangalore campuses) charge a caution deposit of ₹10,000. Sharad Pawar Wardha requires a security deposit of ₹3,00,000 — the highest in this dataset — tied to a compulsory 1-year service bond at the institution after completion.
- Other Fees at Manipal Colleges
Manipal College of Dental Sciences (both campuses) lists “other fees” as a distinct head alongside tuition. For clinical branches, other fees amount to ₹4,84,000 per year. For non-clinical branches, other fees amount to ₹2,19,000 per year. These figures are embedded in the total course fee published by Manipal, but students comparing only tuition figures will miss them entirely.
- Hostel Fees
Dr. D.Y. Patil Pune explicitly states hostel fees of ₹3,05,000 per year including mess charges. Most other colleges in the PDF do not publish hostel fees alongside MDS fee structures, but hostel accommodation is a real and significant cost for outstation students at every campus.
- Costs From Clinical Work Itself
Beyond what the college charges, clinical MDS students carry ongoing costs that arise from treating patients. These costs are unpredictable and recurring. Non-clinical MDS students (Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Public Health Dentistry) carry a much lighter version of this burden.
- Prosthodontics — Highest Extra Cost
Prosthodontics generates the highest out-of-pocket costs of any MDS specialty. Every crown, bridge, denture, and implant prosthesis requires laboratory fabrication. Each case involves a lab bill. Failed cases or remakes double the cost of that case. Materials such as elastomeric impression materials, die stone, and casting alloys are consumed per case. Personal instruments — articulators, facebows, shade guides, prostho kits — are one-time purchases but expensive. Students in high-volume colleges complete more cases, which means higher material spend but also better case exposure.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹5 – 12 lakhs
- Orthodontics — Very High Extra Cost
Orthodontic cases run over months or years, creating a long tail of material consumption per patient. Brackets, archwires, and elastics are consumed continuously. Orthodontic plier sets are a significant one-time instrument cost. Retainers and removable appliances require lab work. Aligner cases, where used, involve higher per-case material costs. The structured nature of orthodontic treatment means costs are spread over time but cumulative.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹4 – 8 lakhs
Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics — High Extra Cost
Conservative dentistry is a daily consumable-heavy branch. Composite resins, bonding agents, and glass ionomer cements are used in every clinical session. Endodontic work consumes rotary files — single-use or limited-use depending on college policy — along with gutta-percha, sealers, and irrigation solutions. An endodontic motor and apex locator are essential instruments that some colleges provide and others expect students to own. High patient flow in this branch means high cumulative consumable spend.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹3 – 6 lakhs
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery — Moderate to High Extra Cost
Oral surgery consumes surgical disposables — sutures, blades, anesthesia cartridges, and minor OT supplies — per procedure. Surgical instrument kits are expensive if personal purchase is expected. Colleges with implant training expose students to high-cost materials, though implant components are usually covered by the patient or institution in most settings. Advanced exposure such as orthognathic or oncology surgery typically uses college-provided resources.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹2 – 5 lakhs
- Periodontology — Moderate Extra Cost
Periodontal surgery uses sutures, membranes, and bone graft materials for regenerative procedures. Laser periodontics, where offered, may carry additional session costs. Scaling and root planing instruments require maintenance and occasional replacement. The branch has a moderate consumable load compared to Prostho or Endo.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹2 – 4 lakhs
- Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry — Moderate Extra Cost
Pedodontic treatment uses stainless steel crowns, zirconia pediatric crowns, pulpotomy materials, and space maintainer fabrication — the last requiring lab work. Behavior management materials and preventive agents such as pit and fissure sealants and fluoride varnish are used frequently. Lab bills for space maintainers and habit-breaking appliances add up over the course of the program.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹2 – 4 lakhs
- Oral Pathology and Microbiology — Low Extra Cost
Oral pathology work centers on research, histology, and diagnosis. Staining materials, reagents, and biopsy processing generate some costs. The main financial investment in this branch is academic — textbooks, research subscriptions, thesis work, and conference participation. No patient treatment material costs apply.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹50,000 – ₹1,50,000
- Oral Medicine and Radiology — Low Extra Cost
Oral medicine work involves case documentation, diagnostic workup, and imaging. Where imaging is not covered by the college, case documentation costs apply. The academic and research load is high, making books, journals, and conference registration the primary out-of-pocket expenses.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹50,000 – ₹2,00,000
- Public Health Dentistry — Low Extra Cost
Public health dentistry requires field surveys, community camps, and data collection as core academic activities. Travel, survey printing, and statistical software are the primary costs. These are moderate but manageable compared to any clinical branch.
Expected extra cost over 3 years: ₹50,000 – ₹2,00,000
Summary: What You Actually Pay in a Deemed MDS Program
| Cost Head | Clinical Branches | Non-Clinical Branches |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | ₹5,50,000 – ₹20,00,000/yr | ₹49,000 – ₹14,33,250/yr |
| University / Exam fees | ₹40,000 – ₹96,850/yr | ₹40,000 – ₹96,850/yr |
| Development / Resource fees | ₹14,500 – ₹2,25,000/yr | ₹14,500 – ₹2,25,000/yr |
| Manipal “Other fees” | ₹4,84,000/yr | ₹2,19,000/yr |
| Security deposit (one-time) | ₹10,000 – ₹3,00,000 | ₹10,000 – ₹3,00,000 |
| Hostel + mess (where applicable) | ~₹3,05,000/yr | ~₹3,05,000/yr |
| Clinical materials + lab work | ₹2,00,000 – ₹4,00,000/yr | Minimal |
| Total estimated 3-year spend | ₹25L – ₹75L+ | ₹5L – ₹55L |
The tuition figure tells you the floor. The actual spend depends on your college, your specialty, your patient load, and how expensive your branch’s consumable and lab requirements are. Students choosing high-fee colleges in material-heavy branches like Prosthodontics or Orthodontics should budget significantly above the published tuition.
Are Deemed University MDS Fees Worth It? What You Get
Pursuing MDS in a deemed university is a financial commitment that runs into lakhs — sometimes crores — over three years. The question most aspirants ask is whether that investment returns value. The answer depends on what you prioritise, which college you choose, and which branch you secure.
Here is an honest breakdown of what deemed universities actually offer.
More Seats Mean Better Branch Access
Deemed universities hold a significant share of total MDS seats in India. Students with mid-range NEET MDS ranks who cannot secure clinical branches in government colleges often secure their preferred specialty in a deemed university. Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, and Oral Surgery seats are available across multiple deemed colleges. This matters because branch selection shapes your entire career — a compromise branch in a government college is not automatically better than a preferred branch in a good deemed college.
All India Admission Through MCC
Deemed university MDS seats are filled through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) All India process. Students from any state can apply. No domicile restrictions apply. The process is centralised and transparent. This removes the complexity of tracking multiple state counselling schedules and eligibility conditions simultaneously.
Clinical Exposure in Established Colleges
Top deemed dental colleges — particularly Manipal, JSS, Amrita, Sri Ramachandra, and Saveetha — operate high-volume dental hospitals with significant patient inflow. Students in these settings encounter advanced procedures including implantology, full-mouth rehabilitation, esthetic dentistry, and complex surgical cases during their MDS program. Infrastructure typically includes CBCT, CAD-CAM systems, digital labs, and dedicated specialty clinics. Mid-tier deemed colleges offer more average exposure, so college selection within the deemed category matters considerably.
Structured Academic Environment
Deemed universities generally enforce strict attendance requirements, regular internal assessments, case presentation schedules, and continuous evaluation. This structure suits students who benefit from a disciplined academic framework. Faster administrative decision-making also means new techniques, updated curricula, and additional courses are implemented more quickly than in government systems.
Stipends — The Partial Offset
All 34 deemed dental colleges in India pay MDS stipends, though the amounts vary widely. According to our detailed MDS stipend guide, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, Bhubaneswar pays the highest stipend among deemed colleges — up to ₹53,000 per month in the third year. Institute of Dental Sciences, Bhubaneswar and both Manipal campuses (Mangalore and Manipal) pay up to ₹40,000 per month.
At the other end, colleges such as Sathyabama University Dental College, KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences, Belgaum, and Sri Siddhartha Dental College, Tumkur pay stipends as low as ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per month. A student at Kalinga receiving ₹53,000/month in year three recovers roughly ₹6.36 lakhs in that year alone. A student at a low-stipend college recovers under ₹36,000 in the same year. The stipend gap across deemed colleges is large enough to meaningfully affect the actual cost of the program.
Private Practice Exposure
Most deemed dental colleges operate within a private healthcare ecosystem. Students gain early exposure to treatment planning, patient communication, fee structuring, and practice-oriented dentistry. For students planning private clinic setup after MDS, this environment provides practical orientation that government hospital setups rarely offer.
Campus and Hostel Facilities
Deemed universities generally provide cleaner hostels, better campus security, and more organised campus infrastructure than many government institutions. Over a 3-year residential program, campus quality affects daily wellbeing in ways that are easy to underestimate during admission planning.
The Trade-Off You Cannot Ignore
Every advantage above comes against a backdrop of high fees, annual fee increases, and the hidden costs detailed in the previous section. The return on investment from a deemed MDS depends on three variables — branch, college quality, and your own clinical output. A student who secures Orthodontics or Prosthodontics in a high-exposure deemed college and builds strong clinical skills can justify the fee investment through private practice income within a few years of completion. A student in a non-clinical branch at a low-stipend, low-infrastructure college will find the math much harder to close.
Bottom Line
Deemed universities are not inherently better or worse than government colleges. They are a strategic option that makes clear sense under specific conditions — when your NEET rank limits government options, when the branch you want is available, when you select a college with genuine clinical exposure, and when you have a realistic financial plan that accounts for tuition, hidden costs, and the stipend you will actually receive. College selection within the deemed category is as important as the decision to pursue deemed university MDS itself.
Wrap Up
I started this article with one goal — to give you a complete, data-driven picture of MDS fees in deemed universities so you can make an informed decision, not a guess.
Here is what I covered and what you should take away from each section.
The college-wise table shows that total MDS course fees in deemed universities range from ₹16,50,000 to ₹60,00,000 for clinical branches and ₹1,47,000 to ₹42,99,750 for non-clinical branches across all 34 colleges. That is not a small range — it means the college you choose matters as much as the category itself.
The branch-wise tables show that within the same college, fees differ sharply by specialty. Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, and Conservative Dentistry consistently attract the highest fees across institutions. Oral Pathology, Public Health Dentistry, and Oral Medicine sit at the lower end. If you are comparing two colleges, always compare branch-specific fees — not the institution’s general fee range.
The state-wise overview shows that Tamil Nadu has the highest number of deemed dental colleges with 10 institutions, while Maharashtra records the highest fees, with annual clinical branch fees reaching up to ₹20,00,000. If geography matters to you, this section helps you narrow down options before you dig into individual college data.
The NRI quota section shows that 17 out of 34 deemed colleges offer NRI seats, with annual fees ranging from $1,100 to $64,700 depending on the college and branch. If you are an NRI candidate or planning to apply under this quota, the fee gap between institutions is enormous — college selection here is even more critical than for the general category.
The hidden costs section shows that tuition is only the starting point. University fees, development charges, security deposits, hostel costs, and clinical consumables add significantly to what you actually spend. For clinical branches like Prosthodontics and Orthodontics, I estimate ₹5 to 12 lakhs in extra costs over three years beyond tuition alone.
The worth it section shows that deemed universities make strategic sense under specific conditions — right branch, right college, realistic financial plan. The stipend data is particularly important here. A student at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences can recover ₹6.36 lakhs in year three alone through stipend. A student at a low-stipend college recovers under ₹36,000 in the same year. That difference should factor into every fee comparison you make.
My final advice is this — do not evaluate deemed university fees in isolation. Compare the fee against the branch you are getting, the clinical exposure the college actually provides, the stipend you will receive, and the career trajectory that branch supports. When you run that full calculation, the decision becomes much clearer. If you found this article useful, I recommend bookmarking it — I update the fee data as colleges publish new circulars for each admission cycle.

Do deemed dental colleges increase MDS fees every year?
Yes. Most deemed dental colleges increase MDS fees annually. Bharati Vidyapeeth institutions and Sharad Pawar Dental College explicitly state a 5% annual fee increase in their official circulars. Dr. D.Y. Patil Pune applies a 3% annual increase. Other colleges apply increases without publishing a fixed percentage. This means a student who joins in Year 1 at a particular fee will pay higher fees in Year 2 and Year 3. I recommend factoring in two to three fee increment cycles when calculating the total cost of your MDS program at any deemed university.
Are MDS fees in deemed universities the same for all branches?
No. MDS fees in deemed universities differ significantly between branches, even within the same college. Clinical branches like Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, and Conservative Dentistry attract the highest fees, while non-clinical branches like Oral Pathology, Public Health Dentistry, and Oral Medicine carry considerably lower fees. For example, at KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences, clinical branch fees total ₹30,09,000 for the full course while non-clinical branch fees total as low as ₹1,47,000 — a difference of over ₹28 lakhs for the same institution. Always check branch-specific fees, not just the institution’s general fee range.
Is MDS stipend available in deemed dental colleges?
Yes. All 34 deemed dental colleges in India pay MDS stipends, though the amounts vary widely. Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, Bhubaneswar pays the highest stipend among deemed colleges at up to ₹53,000 per month in the third year. Institute of Dental Sciences, Bhubaneswar and both Manipal campuses pay up to ₹40,000 per month. At the lower end, colleges like Sathyabama University Dental College, KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences, and Sri Siddhartha Dental College pay as low as ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per month. The stipend gap is large enough to meaningfully affect the actual net cost of your MDS program. For a complete college-wise breakdown, refer to our MDS stipend guide.
How are MDS seats filled in deemed universities — merit or management?
MDS seats in deemed universities are filled through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) All India counselling process. The standard seat split in most deemed colleges is 85% management or paid seats and 15% NRI seats. Unlike state private colleges, deemed universities do not maintain a separate lower-fee merit category within the Indian quota — both merit and management candidates admitted through MCC typically pay the same published fee. The only meaningful fee distinction is between the Indian quota fee and the significantly higher NRI quota fee. Students from any state can apply, as no domicile restrictions apply to deemed university MDS admissions.
