India increased its MBBS seats every year during the last three academic years. In 2024-25 Academic Year, India had 1,17,750 MBBS seats. In 2025-26 Academic Year, the total increased to 1,28,875 seats, adding 11,125 seats in one year, which is a 9.4% increase. During the same year, medical colleges received approval for 11,350 new MBBS seats, excluding AIIMS and JIPMER. In 2026-27 Academic Year, the total reached 1,36,939 MBBS seats. This included 1,27,028 renewed seats and 9,911 newly approved seats. Compared with 2025-26 Academic Year, India added 8,064 MBBS seats, representing a 6.3% increase. Overall, India added 19,189 MBBS seats between 2024-25 Academic Year and 2026-27 Academic Year, resulting in a 16.3% growth in total MBBS seat capacity.

India has 823 medical colleges that offer 1,36,939 MBBS seats for 2026-27 Academic Year. These colleges are located across 35 states and union territories. The seats are divided into 1,27,028 renewed seats and 9,911 newly approved seats for 2026 academic year.
India has 441 Government medical colleges that offer 63,296 MBBS seats (46%). It has 323 Private medical colleges that offer 60,694 MBBS seats (44%). It also has 59 Deemed universities that offer 12,949 MBBS seats (9%). Government colleges are the largest group by number, while private colleges offer almost the same number of seats.
The 9,911 new seats came from two sources. India started 25 new medical colleges, and they added 2,400 seats. At the same time, 129 existing colleges increased their intake and added 7,511 seats. In total, 154 medical colleges received additional MBBS seats during 2026-27 Academic Year.
The Private sector added the highest number of new colleges. It started 18 new colleges (1 Deemed university + 17 private medical colleges) with 2,000 seats. The Government sector started 7 new colleges with 400 seats.
Earlier, the National Medical Commission (NMC) limited a medical college to 150 MBBS seats, and later allowed it to go up to 250. But the NMC has now removed the cap on MBBS seats and dropped the old rule that tied seats to a state's population. So there is no fixed maximum anymore — a college with strong infrastructure and enough teachers can now apply to grow beyond 250 seats.
In the current 2026-27 seat matrix, 250 seats is still the highest intake that any college has, and 216 colleges sit at this level. At the other end, 39 colleges have just 50 seats, which makes them the smallest colleges in the data. Because the NMC has now lifted the cap, the number of colleges crossing 250 seats is likely to rise in the coming years.
The three college types also differ in their average intake. A Government medical college has an average of 144 seats. A Private medical college has an average of 188 seats. A Deemed university has an average of 219 seats. This shows that Government colleges are more in number but smaller in size, while Private and Deemed colleges are fewer but have larger student intake.
Some medical colleges recorded very large seat increases this year. Viraat Ramayan Institute of Medical Sciences (Bihar) and Arya Medical College and Hospital (Rajasthan) increased their intake by 200%, from 50 seats to 150 seats. Several other colleges doubled their intake with a 100% increase, including Takshashila Medical College (Tamil Nadu), Sudha Medical College (Rajasthan), and Government Medical College, Nashik (Maharashtra).
The seats are not distributed equally across India. Karnataka has the highest number of MBBS seats with 15,395 seats across 75 medical colleges. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of medical colleges with 88 colleges that offer 14,000 seats. Tamil Nadu has 13,999 seats, Maharashtra has 13,099 seats, and Telangana has 10,250 seats. Together, these five states account for nearly half of all MBBS seats in India.

Most of this growth came from new colleges. The government opened 7 new medical colleges, and they added 400 seats. Six of these new colleges are small, with 50 seats each. Five of them opened in Chhattisgarh — such as Government Medical College Dantewada and Government Medical College Janjgir-Champa. The seventh new college is Sikkim Government Medical College, and it opened with 100 seats.
Some old colleges also grew. In total, 41 government colleges added seats this year, while 393 colleges kept the same seats. A few grew fast. Government Medical College, Nashik (Maharashtra) doubled its seats with a 100% jump, from 50 to 100. Many colleges in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu grew by 50%, from 100 to 150 seats — for example, Tamralipto Government Medical College (West Bengal) and Government Medical College, Tiruppur (Tamil Nadu).
The colleges differ a lot in size. A government college holds about 144 seats on average. The NMC allows a college to hold 250 seats at most. So the largest government colleges each have 250 seats, and 62 colleges reach this top limit — such as Andhra Medical College (Visakhapatnam), B J Medical College (Ahmedabad), and Bangalore Medical College. The smallest government colleges have just 50 seats, and 33 colleges are this small.
The seats also spread unevenly across states. Maharashtra has the most government seats at 6,000 from 42 colleges. Uttar Pradesh follows with 5,700 seats from 49 colleges, and then Tamil Nadu with 5,349 seats from 37 colleges.

OBC candidates filled 2,595 government MBBS seats through the 15% AIQ in 2025. These seats spread across the government medical colleges shown in the table. The seats did not fill all at once. Colleges filled 265 seats in Round 1, 1,014 seats in Round 2, and 1,316 seats in Round 3. So most OBC seats filled in the later rounds, and a candidate should not stop after Round 1.
The rank range is wide. The best (opening) OBC AIQ rank was AIR 209. The closing ranks stretched past AIR 26,000, which means OBC candidates got a government seat across a large band of ranks.
The seats are not shared equally. A few big colleges took the most OBC AIQ seats. Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam and Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad led with the highest counts, followed by colleges like Government Medical College, Surat and SCB Medical College, Cuttack. Most other colleges filled only 3 to 6 OBC AIQ seats each, because the 15% quota gives each college just a small share.

The growth came from two sources. India opened 17 new private colleges, and they added about 2,550 seats. Alongside this, 75 existing private colleges raised their intake, while 231 colleges kept the same seats.

Deemed universities are the largest colleges in India. A deemed college holds about 220 seats on average, higher than private (188) and government (144). The NMC caps a college at 250 seats, and 41 of the 59 deemed colleges — about 7 in 10 — already sit at this top limit. Only one deemed college is as small as 50 seats.
The seats sit in just a few states. Deemed universities exist in only 14 states and union territories. Maharashtra leads with 3,150 seats from 16 colleges, followed by Karnataka with 3,100 seats from 13 colleges and Tamil Nadu with 2,900 seats from 12 colleges.
